Habit tracking for your clients, with no app to download

Another app is one more thing for a client to forget. Locus tracks one habit between sessions through WhatsApp, which your clients already use, and keeps the record for you.

The problem with one more app

Most coaching platforms track habits inside their own client app. That works for the clients who open it. The ones who need the most support between sessions are often the ones who stop opening it first, and a habit app they've stopped opening tells you nothing.

Locus takes a different route: the check-in goes to the client, in the chat app they already use, and a reply is a line of text or a voice note.

How a client sets up, in about three minutes

  1. They open your link. Every client gets the same link to your practice. It opens in their phone's browser, and they sign in with their email and a code. There's nothing to install.
  2. They write who they're becoming, in their own words, and choose one small action, a cue for when it happens, and a smaller version for hard days.
  3. They pick their days and two check-in times, morning and evening.
  4. They choose With AI or No AI. With AI, they can write anything or send a voice note. With No AI, they tap Done, Smaller version or Not today.
  5. They connect WhatsApp by pressing send on a message with a code already typed in. Locus says hello straight away.

From then on, there is nothing to open. The check-ins arrive on WhatsApp. If a client wants to see their own plan and journal, it's on their Locus page in the browser.

One habit, not a list

Locus tracks a single small action at a time, kept going for about a quarter, with a look back at day 30, 60 and 90. The ask only grows when the client says yes. If Locus suggests a change in conversation, it shows up as a suggestion on their page, and nothing changes until they approve it.

Why one, and why a quarter: in a study that followed people building a new daily habit, it took a median of 66 days to feel automatic, and missing a single day did not undo the progress (Lally et al., 2010). So Locus has no streaks to break. A hard day gets the smaller version, which still counts.

What the tracking adds up to

  • A journal in the client's words. Every reply, with the line Locus recorded for it.
  • Counts that only add up. Days they showed up out of days planned, and how many were the smaller version.
  • Three trends. Confidence, sense of control and stress, rated each evening.
  • A weekly view for you. Who is building, who is steady, who has gone quiet, and who needs you now.
  • A brief before each session. What happened, what's emerging, and one question to open with. See the template.

Quiet is allowed

No reply is recorded as unknown, never as a miss, and Locus never chases. On rest days it sends one light note that asks for nothing. If a client has gone quiet, your weekly view says so, and you decide whether to reach out.

What it costs

Founding coaches in our first pilot use Locus free for their first quarter, with up to 15 clients. After that, Solo is $49 a month including 8 active clients, then $6 per client; Practice is $149 a month including 30 active clients, then $5 per client. An active client is anyone Locus checked in with that month, and paused clients are free.

Check-ins run on WhatsApp today. Plain text messages to US numbers are coming once carriers approve them. More on the check-ins themselves: WhatsApp check-ins for coaching clients.
